Mechanical lymphatic drainage

Mechanical lymphatic drainage is a means of reducing edema which is becoming increasingly popular every year. In the past five years, a lot of scientific publications have appeared, which have demonstrated the method’s effectiveness, and the evidence is now considered to be reliable (IA). The range of problems for which the method is used in a targeted manner has also expanded.

Typically, lymphatic drainage is a supplementary means of treatment, which, in addition to the compression bandage, speeds up the reduction of the swelling caused by venous disease and makes it more effective. This method is also very useful for reducing edema resulting from protracted static stress. These days, almost anyone working in a profession that requires long hours standing or sitting is afflicted by this problem. Among this group are immobile patients in wheelchairs. And even if the patient’s veins are healthy, he or she may experience a feeling of fatigue and swelling in the legs in the evening, which is why the lymphatic drainage method is recommended as a course of treatment to improve the overall health of the legs.

This method is particularly important for patients suffering from lymphatic edema. In some countries, but unfortunately not in Latvia, the health system subsidises the purchase of lymphatic drainage devices for all lymphostasis patients intended for use at home, underlining the relevance of this method. In a lot of countries, lymphatic drainage is used in hospitals during surgery and in the post-operative period as a means of reducing the risk of thrombosis. In Latvia, this method has not yet been adequately evaluated, and there is still room for growth.

As a treatment method, lymphatic drainage also has its limitations, which is patients should first consult a phlebologist and undergo a comprehensive vascular examination.
